Lync 2010 provides communication tools such as instant messaging (IM), audio, video, as well as collaboration tools such as program sharing, screen sharing, attachments, whiteboard, polling, and slide presentations. It's an easy way of being able to transfer files that are too large to email. It's linked to your Outlook account and will show others you're availability. If you need to hold a Lync meeting, use the Online Meeting tool in Outlook - it will save you time and frustration.

Forums / Discussion Boards:
An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are at least temporarily archived. Also, depending on the access level of a user and/or the forum set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible. Learning Management Systems (LMS) have forums built into them.
E-portfolios:
(electronically stored portfolios) provides students with the ability to electronically store collections of their work, enabling them to document their learning journey. Some industries strongly encourage workers to keep portfolios.
Podcasts:
(Webcast) is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through the web
Audacity:
a free digital audio editor and recording application allows teachers and students to easily record audio files
